The Grande Rio School of samba was formed in 1988, four years after the Sambadrome
was created. Their dances are unique beyond all measure of other schools and
they support a number of meanings while dancing. The lavish and creative costumes
are all part of the act but they leave people shocked and bemused by the beauty
and presence of the well trained samba dancers.
This school of samba dancers is known for turning heads and standing up for there beliefs. In 2001 the Grande Rio samba dancers held a protest parade as an attempt to force judges to see the error of their ways and to be fairer in judging the performances of fellow schools of dance. This was an unprecedented act and is one of the things the Grande Rio is well known for.
Carnival is a time that manages to bring together the best of Brazil, especially if you are from or near Rio de Janeiro. The samba dancers of the Grande Rio Academy for samba work year round to perfect the fine rhythm, dance, and musical shows they offer to the Brazilian public during Carnival.
It is a wonderful chance to show their pride in their heritage. Many of the
well know samba performers had parents and other relatives that have danced
before them and now a new generation is her to wear the wonderful eye catching
costumes and awe a new generation of crowd and Carnival goers from around
the world.
The Grande Rio samba school also has one more thing to attribute to their
notoriety and that is their former Carnavelesco. Mr. Joaosinho Trinta held
this important title from 2001-2004.
