The Imperatriz started parading in group 3 at Carnival in 1960. It managed to place sixth in its division with the themed performance, "Homage to the Academy of Letters". This was quite an impressive victory for a new school so Imperatriz was asked to perform in Group 2 at Carnival the following year.
The next few years the Imperatriz Samba School performers moved up in rank scoring 5th place, 3rd place and runner up in division 2 of the Carnival performers. Their runner-up placement led to an invitation to Group 1 in 1965. The trip to first place was bumpy and for the next few years the Imperatriz Samba performers bounced back and forth between the first and second groups at Carnival.
In 1970 the Imperatriz Samba School moved up in rank again in group 1 and this time they didn't falter. Subsequent 6th place in the following year's competition held the school in the first division of samba performances at Carnival. The school remained in division 1 but it bumped back and forth between sixth and ninth places for the next few years.
Then in 1980 something history was made for the Imperatriz Samba School. Under the talented direction of Arlindo Rodrigues the Samba performance, "What that the Bahia Has!" sealed a victory for Imperatriz. The following year Imperatriz once again won the Carnival championship with their performance "Your Hair Does not deny."
The school stayed in the top three rankings for the next few years and after Rodriguez left the Imperatriz Samba School fell several places though it remained in group 1 throughout the 1980's.
In 1990 the samba school was asked to perform in the special group and they
have been performing there ever since. It didn't take the Imperatriz performers
long to win a victory in 1994. The Imperatriz has had a rich and vibrant Carnival
history. The samba performers for Imperatriz just keep getting better every
single year. They are one of the best groups to watch perform at Carnival.
