Samba schools took longer to rise from the poorer neighborhoods in Brazil
but like more influential neighborhoods they less fortunate managed to rise
and make their ability to samba not to mention their love for their culture,
known.
One of the first schools do to this was Mangueira. Originally in the slums, this samba school was born near a hill of the same name and decided to use it as an offering to their people.
The dancers of Mangueira dance a samba unlike any others. They are not only one of the special group but they are one of the more popular along with schools like Portela. One of the things that make Mangueira so popular is the use of their cultural heritage. Not one to forget where they came from, this group of highly trained dancers use their homeland and their upbringing to open up their stories of samba to those around them.
From the unique and pleasing woman, the breathtaking moves, the encapsulating music, the outstanding costumes, to the beautiful and outstanding school colors of pink and green, everything about the Mangueira makes you stand up and take notice.
The Mangueira is Brazil's most popular samba school to date. The samba dancers
have won numerous competitions including the very first Carnival Parade Championship
in 1932 and the first Parade that was ever held in the Sambadrome in 1984.
