Samba is an incredible art form in Rio. There are many Samba schools throughout the city and Brazil as a whole. Which Samba school you attend depends on where you live.
Samba Schools, such as Mocidade Padre Miguel are incredibly competitive. One of the biggest competitions occurs at Carnival. People travel all over the world to see the world famous Samba dancers that grace the streets, dancing in celebration.
Students at the Mocidade Samba School have been performing in Carnival since 1957, two years after the school opened. It was their performance at Carnival that actually made the school well-known in the Rio de Janeiro Samba community.
The competitors in Mocidade Padre Miguel sang to the Samba and earned 5th place at Carnival, a great feat for a new performer. This sealed the schools place at Carnival, and they have attended Carnival, performing both vocally and dancing since then.
The performance is more then just dancing. The schools go all out as they use props, floats, and other creations that make quite a spectacle for the crowd. Samba Schools spend the entire year planning for Carnival. Whoever can make the biggest spectacle and give a dazzling performance is given the grand prize.
The Rio de Janeiro Sambaschool first won first place in 1979. There theme was “Discoverer of Brazil” and was largely designed by Arlindo Rodrigues. Rodrigues also sang a samba tune as a spectacle that included birds, Gods, and monsters filled the block. It was a stellar performance that allowed the school to move in a new direction.
Mocidade Padre Miguel was able to have such great directors as Gibi, Paulo Andrade, Vicente of Paula, Bronze, Sérgio Miranda, and Joe Roberto to name a few. These individuals helped transform the school into one of the biggest Samba schools in Rio.
The Samba School is located in Priest Miguel. The sambaschool name is actually translated to mean “Youth of Priest Miguel”. Since mostly youths participate at the Samba school the name fits perfectly.
The Rio Mocidade Samba school of Padre Miguel will continue
to be one of the best Samba schools in Rio de Janeiro, impressing the crowds
at Carnival for many years to come.
