Porto de Pedra, or "Port of the
Rock" Samba School is just one of
the many schools that were founded in correspondence with one of Brazil's top Soccer Clubs.

The Porto de Pedra Samba School originally began as part of the Porto de Pedra, or Port of the Rock, Soccer Club. Many of the Rio de Janeiro Samba schools were originally part of Soccer Clubs in the areas where they were founded.

The School and Soccer Club actually began as a Block of Attack by teen street gangs. It gave the youth of São Gonçalo another option. The gang could actually do something productive. The Club first paraded through the streets first in 1975 and was extremely successful.

In 1978 the school went corporate and it became a Block of Plot instead of a Block of Attack. It wasn’t a year later before the school won it’s first championship thanks to the plot and the hard work of its founders, Mr. Haroldo Moreira; President, Jose Carlos Rodrigues, Jose Pablo de Oliveira Chaffin, Jorair Blacksmith, Jorge Brum and Nilton Belomino Bishop.

Thanks in large part to this victory, Porto de Pedra had officially become a Samba School and was able to compete at Carnival in Group B. The school did not participate in Carnival every year. It was growing rapidly, and to accommodate for such growth changes had to be made.

The school was revitalized in 1993 thanks in large part to Jorge Luiz Guinâncio and Ubervaldo Sergio de Oliveira. By 1995 Porta de Pedra was actually invited to participate in Group 1, the Special Group at Carnival. The school was back in business!

The school has had quite a bumpy journey, earning 9 th place in competition in 1996 and 5 th place in 1997. However, in 1999 the school suffered a blow as it came in 13 th place. Since then, Porta de Pedra has been trying to regain its place in the Carnival Samba competition and maintain its place as a prestigious Samba school in Rio.
