The merging of two Samba Schools
into the Salgueiro School was the right decision. The School has been a crowd favorite since the 1950's.

The Salgueiro School of samba was born on March 5th, 1953. This particular samba school was a joining of two schools that has since become very popular Carnival entertainers known for their lavish costumes and extravagant dances.

The first dance performed was the Pilgrimage to the Bahia, in 1954, which managed to rank third of all the samba schools in Rio de Janeiro thanks to the elaborate and well planned samba routine that the fine members of the Salgueiro School had done.
One of the things that make the Salgueiro so different is their samba style dance stories. Some of the more popular and interesting dances the samba dancers have performed include such names as Slave ship, Colorful historical trip to Brazil, and Epic of the Samba. In each of these dances the judges favored them with a 3rd or 4th place spot.

In 1960 the Salgueiro won the samba dance championship for the amazingly done Quilombo of the Palmares. As time passed, the elegant and cultural dances that the Salgueiro performed each year, won over the hearts of those in Brazil during Carnival. The samba dancers with this school continued to win championships in the following years of 1963, 1965, and 1969.

In 1971 the Salgueiro School of samba won the championship for a dance known as, Party for a Black King. The next decade brought two additional championship and many top awards. It is obvious why the samba dancers of the Salgueiro are so popular. The costumes and dances make the well thought out stories come alive.

As we travel into a more modern era the dances of the samba dancers continue to dazzle and delight both Brazilian and International audiences. The Salgueiro is a school that was born out of beautiful cultural tradition and a love for the dancing women of Samba.
